Last Monday this interesting documentary was broadcast by VPRO Backlight. Be sure to watch it and forward it to the administrators and policymakers in the Netherlands. Backlight shows that copying is sometimes very sensible and efficient. :-)
Attention drivers of the Netherlands! Persistent problems in the Netherlands, in healthcare, education and industry have long been resolved in neighboring European countries. By bold vision with bold decisions and spectacular results. Backlight investigates the solutions.
The brand-new Rutte II cabinet is bent on spending cuts, spending cuts and new policy. Backlighting lends politicians a helping hand by looking across borders. How do they deal with well-known Dutch headaches such as the rising costs of healthcare, the problems in education, and the creation of new jobs? Bold decisions based on bold visions have already led to spectacular results abroad.
In Norway, for example, they send their needy elderly to sunny Spain and thus save a lot of money. In Finland they have the best education in Europe, almost as good as in top education regions Singapore and Shanghai. As in secondary education, teachers in Finnish primary education are required to have a university education. Anyone who teaches has the status of a physician. In New Zealand, the government has taken over the drug market, sidelined the pharmaceutical industry and thus made healthcare a lot more affordable. And Germany is committed to sustainable industry: it earns 300 billion euros a year and has already created 380,000 jobs.
Directors of the Netherlands, why shouldn't we just take over?
