Een interessant vervolg op de TED rel nadat TED besloot twee praatjes maar even weg te censureren… And then the internet happened. Helaas voor TED kwamen ze hier niet mee weg. Luister hier naar het verhaal van Graham Hancock over zijn ervaringen toen TED zijn Talk offline haalde en naar zijn visie op vele zaken waaronder de menselijke ziel en het aanbreken van een nieuw tijdperk in het menselijk bestaan.

Unprecedented developments at TED.

I appreciate and respect the fact that TED have now bitten the bullet — which cannot have been easy for them — and fully retracted their original incorrect allegations against the content of my TEDx presentation “The War on Consciousness”. They have done so by crossing out the original allegations and publishing my rebuttal here: http://blog.ted.com/2013/03/14/open-f…

They have done the same as regards their original incorrect allegations against the content of the TEDx presentation “The Science Delusion” by my colleague Rupert Sheldrake.

I want to put on record my immense appreciation and respect for the tremendous efforts made by so many members of my Facebook community to get this injustice righted, not only by their posts here but by their engagement on the TED website and the blog posts they have made there. I am touched and heartened, buoyed up and encouraged by this remarkable level of support and it is a sign of the times that our voice has been heard.

TED continue to refuse to restore the talks to the original platform on which they appeared — the TEDx Youtube channel — where my talk had been viewed by more than 132,000 people and where Rupert’s talk had been viewed by more than 35,000 people before TED took them down. I regard it as unfortunate in the extreme that all the conversations and comments that appeared there have been hidden along with the talks, and that those original links have been broken, and I will continue to press for the restitution of our talks to the TEDx Youtube channel separate from and in addition to the presence they now have on the TED blog pages.

TEDx professor in psychiatrie en neurowetenschap over paddo’s

Een interessante TEDx Talk van een professor in psychiatrie en neurowetenschappen over de psychoactieve stof in paddo’s. Ze hebben een wetenschappelijke studie gedaan wat deze stoffen met mensen doen in een goed gecontroleerde wetenschappelijke setting. Er kwamen ook voor deze professor bijzonder interessante resultaten uit hun onderzoek.

Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., is Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His principal research focus in both clinical and preclinical laboratories has been on the behavioral and subjective effects of mood-altering drugs. He is also currently a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Drug Dependence for the World Health Organization.

Een interessante TEDx talk van Rupert Sheldrake over The Science Delusion. Interessant genoeg heeft deze TED Talk samen met de Talk van Graham Hancock die hier eerder verscheen over Ayahuasca bij TED voor nogal wat opschudding gezorgd.

The science delusion is the belief that science already understands the nature of reality, in principle. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. The impressive achievements of science seemed to support this confident attitude. But recent research has revealed unexpected problems at the heart of physics, cosmology, biology, medicine and psychology. Dr Rupert Sheldrake shows how the sciences are being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. Should science be a belief-system, or a realm of enquiry? Sheldrake argues that science would be better off without its dogmas: freer, more interesting and more fun. Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and 10 books, including The Science Delusion. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge University, a Research Fellow of the Royal Society, Principal Plant Physiologist at ICRISAT (the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) in Hyderabad, India, and from 2005-2010 the Director of the Perrott-Warrick Project, funded from Trinity College, Cambridge. In deze TED Talk niets minder dan de overbodigheidsverklaring van ons gehele huidige onderwijsmodel. Verplaats onderwijs naar de Cloud van het internet en laat kinderen via de grote en interessante vragen hun eigen dorst naar kennis stillen. Dat is de visie van Sugata Mitra die onderzoek heeft gedaan naar zelf organiserende onderwijs systemen wat prima resultaten opleverde.

Educational researcher Dr. Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” experiments have shown that, in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other, if they’re motivated by curiosity and peer interest. In 1999, Mitra and his colleagues dug a hole in a wall bordering an urban slum in New Delhi, installed an Internet-connected PC, and left it there (with a hidden camera filming the area). What they saw was kids from the slum playing around with the computer and in the process learning how to use it and how to go online, and then teaching each other.

The “Hole in the Wall” project demonstrates that, even in the absence of any direct input from a teacher, an environment that stimulates curiosity can cause learning through self-instruction and peer-shared knowledge. Mitra, who’s now a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University (UK), calls it “minimally invasive education.”

Een TED Talk die al redelijk oud is en wellicht wat gedateerd maar het is nog steeds erg interessant om het verhaal achter wikipedia te horen van Jimmy Wales himself.

Jimmy Wales herinnert zich hoe hij “een ongeregelde bende vrijwilligers” samenbracht. Hij gaf hen de middelen om samen te werken en ontwikkelde zo Wikipedia, de online encyclopedie die zichzelf organiseert, zichzelf verbetert en nooit af is.

Deze TED Talk heeft Nederlandse ondertitels.

 

 With a vision for a free online encyclopedia, Wales assembled legions of volunteer contributors, gave them tools for collaborating, and created the self-organizing, self-correcting, ever-expanding, multilingual encyclopedia of the future.

Massimo Banzi hielp de Arduino uitvinden, een kleine, gebruiksvriendelijke, opensource microcontroller die duizenden mensen over de hele wereld heeft geïnspireerd om de meest coole dingen te maken — van speelgoed tot satellietuitrusting. Want inderdaad, “Je hebt niemands toestemming nodig om iets geweldigs te maken.”

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino development environment (based on Processing). Arduino projects can be stand-alone or they can communicate with software running on a computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP).

The boards can be built by hand or purchased preassembled; the software can be downloaded for free. The hardware reference designs (CAD files) are available under an open-source license, you are free to adapt them to your needs.
Arduino received an Honorary Mention in the Digital Communities section of the 2006 Ars Electronica Prix.

TED – Wie controleert de wereld?

In augustus 2011 verscheen hier reeds het artikel: Wereld gecontroleerd door 147 bedrijven, afgelopen maand kwam er ook een TED Talk beschikbaar van één van de wetenschappers die dit onderzoek uitvoerden. Hij laat hier de methode zien die ze hebben toegepast en hoe ze erachter kwamen dat 147 bedrijven in de wereld controle hebben over 40% van de wereldwijde rijkdom.

James Glattfelder studies complexity: how an interconnected system — say, a swarm of birds — is more than the sum of its parts. And complexity theory, it turns out, can reveal a lot about how the economy works. Glattfelder shares a groundbreaking study of how control flows through the global economy, and how concentration of power in the hands of a shockingly small number leaves us all vulnerable. James B. Glattfelder aims to give us a richer, data-driven understanding of the people and interactions that control our global economy. He does this not to push an ideology — but with the hopes of making the world a better place.

 

In het artikel: “Network of corporate control“, is o.a. een top 50 van meest belangrijke bedrijven binnen deze 147 te vinden. Niet verrassend zitten hier nogal wat geldscheppende instellingen tussen in de vorm van internationale private banken. Het is echter enigszins bevreemdend om twee Nederlandse bedrijven op de lijst terug te zien die nota bene staatssteun hebben ontvangen… Op 41 vinden we de ING groep en op 45 Aegon.

Misschien wordt het tijd om nog wat leden voor de stichting Ons Geld te gaan werven om ons huidige systeem grondig te kunnen hervormen.

TED – De evolutie van compassie

Robert Wright maakt gebruik van evolutionaire biologie en de speltheorie om uit te leggen waarom we waarde hechten aan de gouden regel (‘Behandel anderen …”), waarom we hem soms negeren en waarom er hoop is dat we in de nabije toekomst de compassie om hem te volgen zullen kunnen opbrengen.
